1) Jonah Ideas
I did this with my afterschool group of 8-12 years olds.We have a hallway
that has no outside lighting and can be "sealed" off. I took a plastic
ziplock bag and filled it with such goodies as sardines, cooked spaghetti,
cooked cabbage...... and let it set for a while. I opeened the bag and let
the "aroma" fill this small hallway area. The lesson for the day was on no
matter where you are you are never far away from God. We talked about
obedience and trust, read the story up to landing in Ninevah(another day's
lesson) and then went into the hallway. It was dark, stinky, and a little
scary because they didn't recognize the smell. We said a prayer together,
talked about what it would be like to be in the belly of a whale, and then
some of the braver, more trusting ones actually agreed to put their hands
into the bag. It was a lesson they still talk about. When we went back to
the room we talked about how God is always with us - No matter what! Hope
this helps. In His Service,Joy Meagher, Toledo, Ohio

2) Living the life of Jonah
I have not tried this myself, but I have seen it done and may even have
the pattern for it, but the best example I have seen to teach about Jonah
was a large fish made from a black industrial size garbage bag (very large
and very dark). I believe it was just opened up and the opening was the
mouth; the bag was against the wall so I don't think there really was a
'fish tail' The opening was decorated to look like a mouth and the
'fish' had eyes. Then inside there was an open can of tuna placed in the
back and the kids went in one at a time to see what it would have been
like to be trapped in the belly of a fish. I saw the demonstration at a
teaching workshop about 10 years ago and still remember what going in that
'fish' was like (hot and dark and humid and smelly!). I believe it was
the lady's own design; her name is Sarah Richey and her books are
published by her brother SAIN PUBLICATIONS).

3) Sunday School Time
>Just wondering what time everyones class is at? Is it during Church
>services or befor Church.
HI, this is response to Jenny who asked about Sunday School times. We have
2 services, 8am and 10am. Sunday School meets from 10-10:45. We bring the
children up to the church to their families at the Peace. It's nice having
the children there for communion and blessing with their families.
Best,
Jenny (from CT)

4) Jonah Idea
In reply to those teaching Jonah. . . We took a large roll of black
garden plastic (the kind you use to keep weeds away) and taped two 10 foot
lengths together to make a long rectangle. At one end we taped the
plastic around a box fan and then taped the plastic to the floor along the
long sides. Plastic packing tape works best. The other end became the
entrance to the whale. When you turn the fan on the plastic ballons up
and kids can crawl inside. One teacher stays inside at the fan end to
prevent accidents! She had a plastic spray bottle to mist the children
and some cut onions in a bowl in front of the fan to simulate being in the
stinky belly of the whale. The other teacher guided the children into the
whale. Both kids and adults loved this and asked to go in multiple times.

5) Family Conference
I am responding to the lady the person who is going to have a "Family
Conference". She is wanting workshops for the children and speakers. It
sounds like she is asking for speakers for the children! But, is she
really asking for speakers for the adults & if so on what subjects & what
city & state is she in, & for what dates is she looking for someone? She
can e-mail me at: nhdowling@yahoo.com
Thanks,Nancy DowlingWeatherford, Texas

6) Bible Study Help!!!
I need HELP!!! We have a group of children in our church in the 3rd - 5th
grade that need a bible study time on Wednesday nights. We have no formal
class set up and no curriculum at this time but would like to get
something started. If ANYONE has ideas for this age group please let me
know. These young children seem bored and I reallly need something that
will grab them and hold them tight!!!
Thank You.

7) Response to Youth Service
Lynette:
Your idea for a youth service is great. We do it every year in our church
with our 6th -12th graders and we call it Youth Sunday. The youth
basically lead the entire service. They serve as ushers, scripture
readers, do all the music, and we always have a senior who is chosen by
our youth group and leaders to preach the sermon. It is a wonderful
experience for our youth and our church always looks forward to this
Sunday. We usually do this in the spring of the year. This year our
youth wanted to add some special music so all those who play instruments
(from drums to violins and everything in between) have gotten together and
formed an orchestra. With the help of our Music Director they have picked
out some fun music and really been practicing hard for thier performance
on Youth Sunday. Hope this info helps!!!
