2) Ash Wednesday
Every
year, when Ash Wednesday rolls around, I have been amazed that no matter what
subject I may be teaching during that semester, whether it be The
Parables of Jesus, the Sermon
on the Mount, the Names
of God, or the Lord's
Prayer, the subject at hand always converges in a way to
incorporate Ash Wednesday into the lesson plan. And this year is no different!
I have been teaching the Ten
Commandments, "God's Top Ten."
This week's lesson is on the 6th
commandment, "Don't murder." In this
commandment, we learn of God’s love, because he created us in
his image. And because God gives us life, he is the only one who has the
right to take it away. (The commandment, “Do not murder,” has in mind the
purposeful taking of innocent human life.) This lesson also speaks of
how Jesus was murdered on a cross--yet he willing gave up his life for ours.
We are then called to repent, confess our sins, and turn to God. (Isn't it
remarkable how the lesson converged with Ash Wednesday, again, this year?)
